This past Saturday on October 14th, 2017, runners, walkers, vendors, volunteers, Samaritan House staff and community supporters braved the chilly weather to participate in the 2nd annual Wards Corner 10k put on by Mettle Events.
Wards Corner 10K is a celebration of the fall season to scenic Wards Corner in Norfolk with great run/walk through the scenic Wards Corner, Talbot Park and Riverpoint neighborhoods. This year, they invited Samaritan House to be the beneficiary of the race.
This race was a timely addition to our Domestic Violence Awareness Month calendar of events for the Paint 757 Purple campaign this October. In previous years, we have hosted our own 5k event in Virginia Beach. This has been a special event for many of our supporters, plus survivors and families of those who walk in remembrance of ones they’ve lost to domestic violence. This year, we looked at different avenues of honoring survivors and their families, fundraising for our programs, and getting the word out about Samaritan House during the month of October. This was our first official event that branched into Norfolk, and we hope to expand even more throughout Hampton Roads, since we provide services to all seven cities!
We are still awaiting final numbers from the race event organizers but we want to share a special thank you to all those who participated with us Saturday. Thank you to all of the runners, walkers, volunteers, sponsors, vendors, Samaritan House staff and board members, as well as first responders and neighbors who facilitated a safe and fun race event!
