We recently had the opportunity to shadow a family as they moved into their new house. A father and his young children had been living out of their car for months. They needed to be housed in a place that met all safety requirements and was affordable, and they needed assistance fast. Our team of housing locators and case managers worked with local property managers to find an available unit and we found a match within just a few days.
This is that family’s story. What you see here is that very first time a dad gets to turn the key to his own place as his kids explore their new home. We have intentionally not shown their faces to protect their identity and privacy. We don’t often get to share individual stories due to the sensitive nature of our work, and we appreciate the willingness of this father to have our marketing coordinator document this moment.
The items you see are ones that were generously donated by individuals in the community. The ability to help this family move into their own place and get back on their feet is made possible through the donations made by our supporters. We cannot thank you enough for continuing to make our work possible!
Help Samaritan House provide move-in kits for families fleeing from violence or homelessness by donating new or gently used home items.
We house families all across Hampton Roads, and being able to provide a family with some of the items crucial for comfortable, safe living is such a blessing. We could not do this without the support of our donors. Our hope is to provide every family moving into permanent housing with a “move-in kit.” These are the items most necessary to creating the comfort and stability for taking care of daily activities, and ease the transition while money is tight.
