Signs of Domestic Violence

Education, Outreach & Prevention

How can we work together to prevent violence and homelessness in Hampton Roads?

Education is the best prevention. Samaritan House believes that prevention begins with awareness of healthy and unhealthy relationship patterns and offers a variety of training, presentations, and interactive workshops to help build awareness of domestic and sexual violence as well as human trafficking to the community. Our Primary Prevention Specialist provides programming and presentations to children and teens, business associations, faith-based groups, and after-school programs. Please contact us for a presentation and help be part of the solution. Presentations can be tailored for specific audiences and age groups.

Yellow Lotus Collective

The Yellow Lotus Collective is looking for students from across Virginia Beach, grades 8-12, to volunteer at Samaritan House as Violence Prevention Ambassadors. Under their role as Yellow Lotus Collective members, ambassadors will prevent violence by conducting community outreach and program facilitation with their peers on topics such as healthy relationships, teen dating violence, consent, and bullying. The Yellow Lotus Collective aims to amplify teen voices in violence prevention, not just at an individual level, but also at a relationship and community level. The Yellow Lotus Collective seeks to be a creative and innovative outlet for Virginia Beach students to gain skills in leadership, community service, public speaking, and community organizing.

If you are interested in becoming a Violence Prevention Ambassador, please apply to the Yellow Lotus Collective by completing the application by May 18th. Click here to complete the application.

If you have any questions, please contact Sara Mitchell, Primary Prevention Specialist at Samaritan House, at saram@samaritanhouseva.org.

Two Educational Programs Available

Coaching Boys Into Men (CBIM)

A program of Futures Without Violence, Coaching Boys Into Men (CBIM) is the only evidence-based violence prevention program that trains and motivates high school coaches to teach their young male athletes in healthy relationship skills, mental health practices, and that violence never equals strength through 12 weekly discussions. By leveraging the power of sports, coaches, and community Advocates, CBIM can transform the culture of our teams, schools, and communities.

Bringing in the Bystander

Bringing in the Bystander (BITB) is a prevention program based on the concept that all community members have a role to play in ending incivility, harassment, violence and discrimination. The important role that a bystander has in intervention is the basis for this unique and effective program.

The program helps college-age individuals gain the knowledge and skills needed to identify and safely intervene before, during and after instances of risky behaviors.

Contact Lisa Maund via email, by phone at (757) 631-0710 or fill out the online form below if you are interested in Coaching Boys Into Men, Bringing in the Bystander or another training today.

Dynamics of Domestic Violence

Dynamics of Domestic Violence—Recognition, Prevention & Intervention
